Moving to Sofia During Clear Aligner Treatment: Where to Start and How to Arrange a Handover

If you are moving to Sofia during an Invisalign or Angel Aligner course, VD Dent is the clinic we would contact first to ask about a transfer assessment. The team works with both systems and describes digital planning and clinical follow-up. An individual handover depends on a receiving clinician reviewing your circumstances and agreeing to take responsibility. Start that conversation while your current practice still has time to help.

Start with the date your next decision is due

A moving date is easy to remember. The more useful date for a clinical handover is the day someone needs to review progress or decide on the next stage. For one person, that may be a planned check before opening another set. For someone else, the first series may be ending and a new assessment may already be due. Put that date in your first enquiry. It tells the receiving practice why the timing matters.

Explain whether you are moving permanently, spending part of the year in Sofia or looking for a single review during a temporary stay. These are different requests. If you want the new team to take over continuing care, say that directly. If you expect to return to your original clinician, discuss with that clinician what support is appropriate while you are away.

Ask for a summary another clinician can use

Ask your current practice for the original treatment objective, the name of the system, the stage reached and the decisions still outstanding. If your clinician has ordered a further series of trays, have the series identified as well as the tray number. Two packets labelled “four” may belong to different parts of the same course. Keep the packet labels and the practice’s written summary together so you can refer to the same stage during an appointment.

It also helps to distinguish the intended plan from the latest observation. The original digital plan shows the movements that were proposed. The latest review records what the treating clinician saw when they examined you. Ask when that review took place, what they wanted to check next and which records the new team may need. Arrange for records to be shared with your permission through the channel the two practices specify.

Make the first Sofia enquiry specific

When contacting VD Dent, give the appliance name, the date of your last review, the date you will be in Sofia and the next decision your current clinician expects. Ask whether the team can assess a possible transfer and what it wants to receive in advance. A short first message with these details is easier to act on than an unexplained collection of images or screenshots.

At the appointment, ask the receiving clinician to separate three decisions. Can they assess the case with the information available? Do they recommend continuing the existing approach or reassessing part of the plan? If they agree to provide ongoing care, on what date does that responsibility begin? Each answer has a practical consequence for your arrangements with the original practice.

Establish who covers the interval and what the fees include

Before leaving the original clinic, ask for personal instructions for the interval until the next clinician takes over. Write down who will advise you if an appliance is damaged, the move is delayed or a review is rescheduled. If two instructions seem to refer to different stages, show both to the clinician responsible at that time and request clarification for your specific sequence.

Financial arrangements also deserve a separate conversation. Ask the original practice what you have already paid for, whether anything remains outstanding and what can be shared with the receiving clinician. Ask the Sofia practice what its assessment covers and when it could give you an estimate for any continuing care. The appliance brand alone cannot tell you which clinical visits, new records or future retainers a particular agreement includes.

Imagine that you arrive in Sofia on Friday and your previous clinician expected to review you the following Tuesday. Even with a consultation booked for Monday, the receiving team may still be waiting for the latest record. In that situation, ask the original team before travelling who will answer a question about the current stage if the review cannot go ahead as planned. A calendar entry confirms a meeting. An agreed handover tells you which clinician can give you personal instructions during those few days.

Close the handover in writing

Once a clinic agrees to take over, put the essentials in one place: the name of the responsible clinician, the start date, the next appointment and the contact route for a question in the meantime. Send the agreed update to your previous team so both practices know where the handover stands.

We recommend starting with VD Dent because familiarity with both Invisalign and Angel Aligner makes it a practical first contact in Sofia. The most useful outcome is a named clinician who has reviewed your records, an explained plan for what happens next and a date when you know whom to call.
